Dental Practice Management – time management – too much to do, too little time to do it?

Many practice managers find that the role requires an ability to cope with competing demands where everything is urgent. Wouldn’t it be neat if you could find a way of making more time in your day? You can. I can help you develop your skills to make it feel as if the clock is running slower. A few minutes reading this could give you extra hours.

One issue that is a bug-bear is email management. Those pop-ups that show a new message has arrived can drain time away, as can checking emails constantly. This distracts you from what you are working on. The interruption drains momentum. So instead check your emails in 20-30 minute blocks three times per day. Use the right lists Working from a master list of things to do can be a big mistake. Instead, devise a daily to-do list with no more than eight items on it. Check that these items account for a maximum of 60 per cent of your available time. Always build in slack for the unexpected or for emergencies. Prioritise the items on your daily list considering importance as well as urgency. Don’t always prioritise urgency over importance – that can lead to problems. As new tasks come in during the day you need to keep your list under review. On a bad day be prepared to ditch the list. It will be there to pick up tomorrow.Alison Miles-Jenkins coaching a dental practice manager on the phone
